As long as Arizona keeps winning, it will remain in the conversation for a second consecutive No. 1 seed, something it hasn’t accomplished in more than 30 years.
The Wildcats (21-3, 10-3 Pac-12) head to the Bay Area this weekend sitting at No. 10 in the NET ranking, which is actually down a spot from where they started the week, but Kansas’s win over Texas on Monday night caused some shuffling. On KenPom.com they sit at No. 9.
Arizona’s Quad 1 win total went down over the weekend, due to Washington State falling out of the top 75. That also means the Wildcats had a Quad 3 loss from that home defeat to the Cougars, but overall they have 11 Q1/2 victories, which is tied for fourth most.
The next two games won’t help much for the resume, though, as Cal is ranked No. 298 in NET and Stanford sits at No. 113. After that is a stretch of much better status boosters, as Utah, Colorado, ASU, USC and UCLA are all in the top 65 in NET.

Arizona catcher Izzy Pacho has had a desire to lead others and help them create their own futures since she arrived on campus. Her goal has always been to become a teacher. Over her almost five years as a Wildcat, it has evolved into a leadership position on the field and a drive to carry that into the future as a coach.
Pacho grew up on Tucson’s southside, attending schools in the Sunnyside school district until it was time to go to high school. At that time, the decision was made to move to the generally more affluent northwest side to cut down on some of the travel her family did in pursuit of her dream of being a Division I softball player.
“It was definitely a big transition and like kind of a culture shock,” Pacho said. “I grew up off of 12th and Valencia, went to Sunnyside elementary schools and middle school. Was planning on going to either San Miguel High School or Desert View. And then my club team was based out Collapse

1 DAY AGO - Arizona Athletics
Jedd Fisch said Arizona signed a “5-star coach” last week when it announced former assistant Duane Akina was joining the staff as a defensive analyst. But there was still the business of filling the vacant cornerbacks position to tend to.
Not any more.
Zach Barnett of FootballScoop.com is reporting the Wildcats are set to hire John Richardson, who most recently spent two seasons as Washington State’s CBs coach and assistant head coach.
Richardson would replace Dewayne Walker, who last month announced his departure from the UA staff after two seasons.
Richardson, who has also coached at Wyoming and North Dakota State, was part of WSU’s staff in 2020-21 but was among the assistants let go along with head coach Nick Rolovich in October 2021. During his time with the Cougars he coached Jaylen Watson, who is playing in the Super Bowl this week with the Kansas City Chiefs, while at Wyoming he coached Philadelphia Eagles safety Marcus Epps.

Down 11 with less than five minutes to go, the first leg of Arizona’s trip to Los Angeles had all the makings of another tough road loss. Then the 22nd-ranked Wildcats erupted for 15 consecutive points, including the first four of overtime, and held on to beat No. 14 UCLA.
Now comes a chance to do something it hasn’t done in more than 20 years: pull off a road sweep in the City of Angels.
Arizona takes on USC on Sunday afternoon seeking its first road sweep of the LA schools since 2002. The Wildcats are 8-3 away from home this season, 2-3 in Pac-12 road games, while USC is 11-1 at the Galen Center with its only loss coming to rival UCLA in mid-December.
This game will go a long way toward determining which teams get first-round byes in the Pac-12 Tournament next month in Los Angeles. Arizona and USC are currently tied for fourth, and the difference between fourth and fifth is an extra day of tournament play.

The first road sweep of the Los Angeles schools in 21 years helped Arizona women’s basketball move back up to No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25. It was an improvement of five spots from last week and makes the Wildcats the third-best Pac-12 team in the media poll.
Arizona beat then-No. 14 UCLA in overtime on Friday night, dropping the Bruins four spots to No. 18 in this week’s poll. The Wildcats followed that with a double-overtime win over a USC team that continues to receive votes despite the loss. USC has wins over Stanford and Colorado, both of whom were ranked.
UA next faces Stanford, which dropped four spots to No. 6 after a surprising road loss to unranked Washington. The Huskies gave Arizona a tough game at McKale Center the previous weekend and were finally able to pull off a big win over a ranked team against the Cardinal.

2 DAYS AGO - Zachary BonDurant-USA TODAY Sports
Saturday night’s game against Oregon State was never in doubt for Arizona, which won by 32 and could have made the margin much bigger had it not pulled its starters early in the second half and let many little-used reserves get a lot of action.
Though that wasn’t coach Tommy Lloyd’s specific game plan, he was happy things worked out that way.
“You’d love to sit there and think you can have puppet strings on this whole thing and manipulate how you want all the time, but that’s just now how it goes,” he said. “I want to play (the bench) all the time, but it’s just not how it goes.”
Our full recap can be found here. Below is what Lloyd and freshmen Kylan Boswell and Filip Borvicanin said afterward:
On if he was worried his team might overlook Oregon State: “Oregon State was on the schedule today, they had our full attention, and I thought our guys came out and played well. It was nice to play well. I didn’t think maybe overall our energy in Collapse

Editor’s note: With several sports going on, Wildcat Wrap serves as a recap that focuses on the Arizona programs that we do not have the time to cover on a regular basis but are certainly worthy of recognition.
The Arizona women’s golf team traveled to Mexico this week for the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club, finishing sixth overall in a packed field.
The Wildcats shot a 33-over par for the three-day tournament, led by Gile Bite Starkute, who shot 4-over for a tie for seventh place. Carolina Melgrati and Julia Misemar each shot 9-over to finish in a tie for 18th.
Arizona finished the tournament one stroke out of fifth-place and 25 strokes behind champion Baylor.
Arizona coach Laura Ianello was impressed with how the team finished after struggling in the first two rounds.
“I am very proud of how our team responded (Monday) after a challenging start to the tournament,” said Ianello. “We were 10-under as a team on the front nine today, Collapse

Easiest decision in the history of decisions It was one of the greatest single-game performances in Arizona history, nearly shattering some longstanding records. And it was only part of another big weekend for Azuolas Tubelis, who continues to build his resume for season-ending awards.
For the time being, though, another conference honor will have to suffice.
Tubelis has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week, the second time this season and third occasion in his career. He got this one after averaging 29.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists on 71 percent shooting in the Wildcats’ home sweep of the Oregon schools.

1 DAY AGO - Zachary BonDurant-USA TODAY Sports
The No. 5 spot in the Associated Press poll has been an unlucky one since the calendar turned to 2023, with every team ranked there lost at least once in the ensuing week.
Until Arizona. And combined with losses from teams above them, the Wildcats are moving up.
Arizona (21-3, 10-3 Pac-12) is now No. 4 in the AP Top 25, tied for its highest ranking of the season. The UA was also 4th in early December before losing at Utah to open Pac-12 play.
Losses by Purdue and Tennessee provided another shakeup to the Top 5, with Purdue (22-2) staying at No. 1 (but losing 24 first-place votes) while Houston (22-2) and Alabama (20-3) are second and third, respectively.
One of those first-place voters the Boilermakers lost went to Arizona, as it was voted No. 1 by Dave Preston of WTOP radio in Washington, DC.
UCLA (19-4, 10-2) remains the only other ranked Pac-12 team, sitting at No. 7.

Heading to Los Angeles this weekend, Arizona women’s basketball needed to make something happen. With a bad showing against No. 14 UCLA and a USC team that’s receiving votes in the polls, it could mean facing No. 2 Stanford on Thursday with a three-game losing streak in tow.
The Wildcats were having none of it. It took overtime in both games, but Arizona will return to Tucson in sole possession of fourth place in the Pac-12 and on a two-game winning streak while the Cardinal will come in off a surprising loss to Washington. Arizona defeated USC 81-75 in double overtime to complete the sweep on the LA road trip for the first time since 2002.
“Just a tremendous amount of resiliency,” said Arizona head coach Adia Barnes. “Not afraid when we’re down, believing that we can still win a game. Made some huge, huge plays and buckets down the stretch. Controlled the boards.”

It turns out Arizona has more than seven players capable of getting on the court outside of garbage time. Then again, much of Saturday night’s game felt like open run at the rec center.
The fifth-ranked Wildcats rolled to an 84-52 win over Oregon State at McKale Center, their most lopsided win in conference play in two years. It was the sixth straight win for the UA (21-3, 10-3 Pac-12) and kept it within a half-game of first place UCLA with four weeks left in the regular season.
Azuolas Tubelis followed up his epic 40-point outburst against Oregon with 19 points and eight rebounds, doing so in just 23 minutes. That was about the average court time for Arizona’s starters, who logged only 117 minutes with none playing the final 7:33.
The lopsided result enabled Tommy Lloyd to give heavy minutes to his bench for the first time since going to a 7-man rotation. Freshman Filip Borvicanin was the first one into the mix, making his 10th appearance Collapse
